There are several essentials in regards to training and conditioning of a teenage athlete. First, every athlete is at a different stage in development and programs should be adjusted appropriately. Second, athletes get benefits from training and with proper technique and supervision can avoid potential risks of injuries that occur in sports. Third, guidelines exist to aid teenage athletes to overcome strength deficits and possibly increase performance. Finally, athletes need to be aware of key terms in training and conditioning. With a strong knowledge base and supervision, teenage athletes can become stronger, perform better and avoid injury with proper training and conditioning.

Heat stress can adversely affect a young athlete’s performance and in some cases can pose a serious health threat. Athletes must take extreme precaution when exercising in hot, humid conditions. Prolonged exposure to extreme heat and humidity can result in dehydration and heat illness. The objective of this presentation is to characterize heat-related illness in sports by describing the causes as well as the types and stages of heat-related illness. This will be followed by a detailed explanation of the strategies used by certified athletic trainers and other allied health professionals to prevent, recognize and treat heat-related illness with a focus on prevention.
